A walk in Battle Great Wood, East Sussex

Sunday morning dawned crisp, fresh and bright.  Since we probably won’t get too many more days like this before winter we pulled on our boots and took a walk in nearby Battle Great Wood.  The ancient woodland, managed by the Forestry Commission, is over 200 acres and I adore the fact that it’s right on our doorstep.

The path leading into the woods

The idea was to practise my photography and capture some of the autumnal colour in the woods but there wasn’t as much turning foliage as I’d hoped for. Not to be put off we headed off-road for some foraging into the soft leaf-mould under the trees.  I was delighted to discover a forest full of fungi. Easily pleased, me! Mr Jones was happy collecting a few logs ready for splitting with his new log splitter and adding to our woodshed.

Just goes to show there’s plenty of exploring to be done right on your doorstep and still time on a Sunday for the papers, a home-cooked roast and a bit of Downton Abbey – perfect day!

Lovely! You picked a good time of year for fungi. I love walking in Battle Great Wood, but when I attempted a walk through the woods in January I was foiled by flooding! (I'll link to your post in my blog, hope you don't mind!)

I often take a walk in the woods - we're just a few minutes away which is great. We went Sunday and managed about an 1.5hrs - hard-going through the mud though and was covered in it when we got back! Further in the paths are better. Hopefully things will improve for the Spring... Thanks for the link - lovely!

Lovely fungi photos. I especially love the shallow depth of field on the last one. You are so lucky to be right on the edge of such gorgeous woods. I would be out there almost every day if given the chance. I wonder how that first shot would look with snow.

Thank you :) I do have a shot of first one in the snow but it's on an external hard drive - I'll try and dig it out at the weekend - so pretty! We get out when we can but too wet and muddy at the moment...

What a variety of fungi! I agree, none look edible. They are all extremely photogenic though :-)
