Barbados beaches. Crystal clear Caribbean waters lapping soft, white powdery sand. Palm trees laden with ripe coconuts. Blue skies stretching into an endless horizon. West coast Barbados beaches have all that, and more. Did I mention the stunning sunsets? But on the Atlantic facing East coast Barbados is rugged, dramatic and altogether different. Barbados in February. Does it get any better? White powdery sand, turquoise seas, wall-to-wall sunshine, rum punch and reggae. That’s what I was expecting from my first visit to Barbados in the Caribbean when we jetted off from a cold, grey Gatwick last month. The island was happy to oblige and ticked all the boxes but she also threw in a few happy surprises including the wonderful Barbados boutique hotel Cobblers Cove. and further round the island the wild and dramatic scenery of the East Coast beaches.

Basseterre is the colourful, laid back, capital of St Kitts. It sits on the bay on the south-west coast of the island overlooking Port Zante where the cruise ships dock. The view of the bay is what you’ll see as you step onto the terrace of the aptly named Ocean Terrace Inn. I spent three nights at this newly renovated 4-star hotel during my visit to St Kitts and just had to stop a moment and soak up that colourful view every time I crossed the terrace.
