Foxhills Golf Club and a Girls’ Weekend Getaway

Foxhills Country House in Surrey

As I drove through the beautiful woodland lined driveway of Foxhills Golf and Country Club I caught glimpses of lush green fairways and pristine greens. I suspected I was in for a treat. When I rounded the bend and came face to face with Foxhills Manor House I knew for sure. Foxhills golf club in Surrey is the perfect venue for a winter weekend getaway and I spent a fabulous couple of days there with the girls last month.

Foxhills Golf Club

Not too far from home, but not too close either, the country estate near Ottershaw in Surrey is set in 400-acres of beautiful heath and woodland. The gothic-style house is the focal point and sits proudly at the heart of the estate. There are two championship courses and a par three course (which made me very happy) but Foxhills offers more than exceptional golfing. So much more. But we’ll start with the golf.

Foxhills Golf Courses

The three golf courses at Foxhills golf club provides a challenge for any level of golfer. The Longcross is named by Golf World as one the top 100 golf courses in England. The beautiful tree-lined course (take extra balls) hosted the 2017 PGA cup which featured top club professionals from Great Britain, Ireland and the USA.

The second Foxhills Golf Course is the rolling Bernard Hunt course named after Ryder Cup captain Bernard Hunt MBE. Finally, perfect your short game on the par three Manor Course with the house as a stunning backdrop. The driving range and putting green will help you get your eye in before heading out for a round. There’s a well-stocked golf shop on site too.

Foxhills Golf Lessons

We started our stay with a two-hour golf lesson with one of Foxhills’ six PGA qualified golf professionals. Ashley Dart was a true pro at dealing with three novice golfing girls, plus me, who is only a little further down the fairway. I don’t have a handicap yet but you can be sure I’m working on it.

Ashley had heaps of patience (he needed it), gave us loads of encouragement, excellent tutoring and was totally charming. By the end of the lesson everyone was getting some decent drives in and our putting was much improved. Not bad for complete beginners. Ashley gave me a couple of pointers about holding my club when addressing the the ball and on my foot placement. It’s made a huge difference already – thanks Ashley. I’m hoping that as I’ll have more free time this year I’ll really get to grips with my game. I’m tempted to return to Foxhills with Mr Jones to play a round or two.

Foxhills Hotel

The house is everything a country manor house should be. High ceilings with moulded features, huge windows overlooking the grounds, wood panelling and a beautiful staircase. The Lounge is perfect for Foxhills afternoon tea or relaxing and reading the Sunday papers. It also serves everything from snacks, tea and coffee to cocktails and after-dinner snifters.

The reception desk is in the main house along with a range of meeting rooms. There’s a relaxed vibe and the staff are friendly and welcoming.

Foxhills Dining

Manor Restaurant, the hotel’s two AA rosette and main restaurant, was closed for a refurb during our visit so, sadly, we didn’t eat there and I can’t give a personal review. Another reason to go back! We had breakfast and dinner in the aptly named ‘Nineteen’ – near the eighteenth holes of both main courses. The Summer House, next to the resort’s 11 tennis courts, offers both outdoor and indoor dining options with a range of menus. In the spa garden step into the red telephone box to order your food.

Rooms at Foxhills Golf Club and Resort

Guests stay in a range of 70 spacious rooms including standard, executive and a variety of suites from junior, family and duplex suites. I stayed in a stylish executive room converted to a twin as I was sharing. All the rooms are in a series of small courtyards which give Foxhills a homely village feel.

Executive Room at Foxhills Surrey

My stylish room was bright and spacious with contemporary décor and a balcony overlooking the tennis courts. A desk and chair, sofa and flat-screen TV made up the furnishings. Tea and coffee-making facilities were secreted away in a cupboard with a range of snacks and a mini-bar. A cafetière, tea and fresh milk was provided which meant a decent cup of coffee before facing the world in the morning. Always a good thing. Bottled water was provided free of charge.

The Bathroom

The bathroom was roomy and had both a shower and separate bathtub which I think is important in a sporting resort. After playing 18 holes on a dank drizzly day only a hot bath will do. White Company products, bathrobes and slippers together with plenty of soft white towels made for a luxurious stay.

Foxhills Spa

After our golf lesson we made for the spa and some relaxation. The spa’s 20 metre pool is a good size and big enough to swim some decent lengths and includes a Hydropool with massage jets. It’s one of five at the resort; two indoor and three outdoor. After a swim we stepped outside to the spa garden Jacuzzi and let the jets and bubbles soothe our golf shoulders.

The spa’s outdoor pool is one of England’s first natural swimming pools with the chemical-free water purified by plants and minerals. Two Finnish saunas, a steam room and relaxation bays complete the spa garden facilities. The spa menu has a range of treatments from facials and massage to recuperation and holistic. Foxhills Spa offers both spa days and spa breaks.

More Facilities

There’s an array of other facilities at Foxhills which include an extensive programme of exercise classes in the studio. I really enjoyed the yoga class. There’s also a state-of-the-art gym, 11 tennis courts and a 1.5 mile fitness trail.

Signpost of activities at Foxhills

As a guest staying at Foxhills you become an honorary member with access to all classes and the facilities except the two 18-hole golf courses. The club is very much family focused with a range of lessons and activities for all the family. Their aim is to make sure that you leave feeling better than when you arrived. I certainly did, and if I lived nearby I’d be very tempted to join their membership.
