A Literary Weekend Break in Paris

A Literary Weekend Break in Paris

Paris Bouquinistes

The City of Light is one of my favourite destinations for a European weekend break. Paris is heaving with iconic sights and attractions but it’s also loaded with literary landmarks of epic Parisian proportion. Over the centuries writers have sought inspiration from the city, used it as their muse and as a backdrop for many brilliant novels, books and plays.

On your weekend break in Paris instead of rushing around to visit the city’s big sights why not focus on its literary legacy. Having always been a bit of a bookworm I was in my element! If you love getting lost in a book, or a city for that matter, come with me on a literary tour of Paris.

Burning the Clocks, Brighton

Burning the Clocks, Brighton

Burning of the Clocks Brighton

The winter solstice on 21st December is the date that Brighton city centre lights up the darkest, shortest day of the year with a unique festival. Burning the clocks, Brighton is a magical procession which wends its way through some of Brighton’s oldest streets and lanes.

In this community event people hold aloft hand-made willow lanterns in a procession that heads down to the sea. The gathering ends on the seafront at Marine Parade for a spectacular finale of the burning the clocks on the beach. Clocks and lanterns and set upon a blazing beach bonfire followed by a burning the clocks firework display.

Epic Whale Watching in Monterey Bay

Epic Whale Watching in Monterey Bay

One of my most memorable travel experiences was a morning spent whale watching in Monterey California. We’d already had a fantastic time the day before wildlife spotting in Monterey as we walked the Bay. That paled in the shadow of the epic boat trip we took the following day. Whale watching Monterey Bay was the most memorable day of our two-week road trip and one which I’d been looking forward to since we arrived in California.

Secret Paris Food Tour in Le Marais

Secret Paris Food Tour in Le Marais

The rendezvous point for our Secret Paris Food Tour is next to the Temple Metro station. I’m a few minutes early and am happy to soak up the Paris sunshine until our man, carrying an orange umbrella, appears. Our guide’s name, appropriately, is Christophe Boulanger and he comes armed with a bag of Parisian pastries. We nibble on the Chouquettes, sweet, bite-sized choux pastries, while the group assembles before heading off on a mouth-watering Le Marais Secret Food Tour.

Filzmoos Balloon Festival 2020

Filzmoos Balloon Festival 2020

Filzmoos Balloon Week takes place each January in Filzmoos, Austria. This pretty Austrian village nestles in the “ski amadé” region of Salzburgerland. The village lies in a pine-clad valley at the base of the Bischofsmütze Mountain surrounded by a winter wonderland of wooden chalets, fir trees and sparkling alpine scenery.

Filzmoos has so much more to offer than skiing, snow-boarding and hiking. It’s also known as Austria’s Balloon Village. I went along to Filzmoos Balloon Week to find out all about it.
